Problem: I use Text Templates more and more often. But not just in web applications (where there are good solutions), but also in desktop applications. And I use this on Windows and Linux.
Solution: Espanso seems to fit the bill. It does not sync the configuration on its own, but this can be done with Dropbox (or other means)
Installation on Linux is tricky
- Due to dependency problems, I ended up installing the AppImage.
- I had problems with Thunderbird, which seemed totally buggy and did not work with HTML. I solved this by using the following configuration:
backend: clipboard
x11_use_xclip_backend: true
Dropbox
Replacing the configuration location with a symbolic link to the Dropbox location was straight forward, both on Linux and Windows.
Takeaway
I just started using Espanso, but it’s promising and seems to address my needs.
Only disadvantage: I’ve been using QuickText for Thunderbird so far, which can also set Subject line and derive variables from the recipient list. Not sure whether I am going to keep it for personalized stuff or not.
